E-Mail Bulletin #16 - 22 November 2002

  • Come Join Us and Sign
  • League of Women Voters' Open Space Forum
  • What's Next?

Come Join Us and Sign! (1095 and counting...)

We started gathering signatures this Halloween. We surpassed the legal threshold to qualify for the ballot (822 votes - 15% of 5480 registered voters) two weeks later. We are now going on to our goal of over 1100 signatures to ensure a comfortable safety margin, and as of November 21st, we have collected over 1000 signatures.

Next few opportunities for you to sign the petition:

  • Town Hall Parking Lot this Saturday (Nov 23) from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
  • Town Hall Parking Lot - Day after Thanksgiving (Friday, Nov 29th) from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

These will probably be the last two oppotunities for you to sign our initiative, unless you spot us at Safeway or Draeger's or some other location downtown. Come sign before it is too late, and so you can tell your grandchildren you helped . . .

League of Women Voters' Open Space Forum:

The Forum was attended by over 100 citizens and was very informative. The Open Space Forum focused on how local government and citizens can work together to protect open space.

Huey Johnson was honored for his outstanding work in local conservation and for playing an important role in the fight to protect our open space and recreation lands. For Huey, the Mary and Wallace Stegner Award which he received at the Forum, represented the completion of the circle -- the work he'd done back in the '60's to acquire Byrne Preserve and now the successful campaign to help ensure its continued use as open space.

Huey emphasized the need for "a second wave" of open space stewardship - ensuring long-term preservation - and has begun a new organization called "Defense of Place" to undertake this new challenge. Check out the Defense of Place website - www.defenseofplace.org - specifically the entry titled "Los Altos Hills: A Case Study"!

What's Next?

On Monday, December 2nd, we plan to file our initiative petition with our City Clerk. After accepting the initiative petition for filing, the Town will determine whether the petitions contain a sufficient number of valid signatures.

The elections officials have 60 working days to examine and verify each signature filed. Once this has been established, the Town must either adopt the measure or order the measure placed on the ballot. We are optimistic that our new Town Council will elect to do the former!!
